DETROIT– The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan has agreed to represent a Benton Harbor minister who was sentenced to 3-10 years in prison for writing a newspaper article that criticized the judge who presided over his trial.  Today the ACLU filed a motion asking the Michigan Court of Appeals to release him on bond pending a decision in the appeal of the sentence.

Ruling Is Latest Victory In ACLU And Advancement Project Legal Challenge

 

CINCINNATI – The U.S. Appeals Court for the Sixth Circuit late Wednesday rejected Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land’s request to stay a lower court ruling that declared the state’s voter removal programs illegal. This decision clears the way for 5,500 illegally purged voters to be returned to the voter rolls in time for Election Day.

 Detroit Police Department Discriminates Against Pregnant Officers, ACLU Charges

DETROIT -- In an effort to protect the rights of women, the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan filed a federal lawsuit late yesterday on behalf of five Detroit Police officers who were forced to go on unpaid leave after becoming pregnant. The lawsuit charges that the Detroit Police Department discriminated against the officers in violation of the Civil Rights Act and the U.S. Constitution.

DETROIT – In a major victory for voting rights, a judge today ruled that Michigan’s voter removal program violates federal law and ordered the state to stop illegally purging voters from the rolls. The decision comes in a lawsuit filed last month by Advancement Project, the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Michigan and the law firm of Pepper Hamilton LLP.

DETROIT – Advancement Project, the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Michigan and the law firm of Pepper Hamilton LLP filed a federal lawsuit late yesterday challenging two statewide voter purge programs that could potentially disfranchise hundreds of thousands of Michigan voters in advance of the November 2008 presidential election. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court in Detroit against Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, Michigan Bureau of Elections Director Christopher M. Thomas and Ypsilanti Clerk Frances McMullen.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security is scheduled to hold a hearing on a bill that would help end the practice of sentencing children to life in prison without the possibility of parole and provide grants to states to improve the quality of legal representation for youth charged with an offense that could lead to a life sentence.  In a letter to Representatives Robert C. Scott (D-VA), chair of the House Judiciary Subcommittee, and Louie Gohmert (R-TX), ranking member, the ACLU calls on Congress to move forward with H.R. 4300, the Juvenile Justice Accountability and Improvement Act of 2007.
